Advice for would-be book reviewers

Terry’s top tips for writing professional book reviews.

Reviewer’s desk, by Terry Freedman

  • Read the book you’re supposed to review properly. Here’s my approach to reviewing nonfiction books.

  • Don’t use the review as an opportunity to get revenge on someone who wrote a bad review for one of your books. (Tempting as it is!)

  • Don’t use the review to show the reader how clever you are, and that it really should have been your book. (Well, maybe a little!)

  • Don’t avoid reviewing a book in case you find yourself being critical of it.

  • Keep to the word count, style guide and, above all, deadline.
