Books unseen: My Name is Why
My Name is Why is the new book by the poet and writer Lemn Sissay. It’s a memoir with a difference. The author was brought up in the care system (which I’ve always thought was something of a misnomer, though I’m no position to judge). This book draws on the reports written about him by social workers over the years until he reached the age of 18.
I wanted to mention this book, even though I haven’t read it, because the author’s life and achievements are a real testimony to the strength of the human spirit and, I think, the power of forgiveness. Also, how many memoirs are written not just from memory, but from “objective” third party reports?
The book is published by Canongate Books. You can read about the background to the book on the author’s blog.
