If you're going to the London Book Fair today, Wednesday 15 March 2017, you might want to check out these sessions. They all take place in the area known as Authors HQ. Don't ask me which hall it's in: both halls look the same to me. All I can tell you is that there's a purple carpet. Best advice: ask at the info desk as you come in. Anyway, here are the seminars I'll be going to if I can:
Independent Publishing with Kindle Direct Publishing
10:45 - 11:30
Discussion panel featuring self-published authors Rachel Abbott, Mark Dawson, Keith Houghton and LJ Ross. I attended a similar session yesterday featuring Rachel, Mark, and LJ, and last year attended one with Keith. This seminar is always worth attending. I always pick up loads of tips, and get reminded of ones I've forgotten!
Using Sources: Managing Copyright Issues and Avoiding Common Legal Pitfalls
11:45 - 12:30
Session featuring Nicola Solomon of the Society of Authors, and author Janet Lawrence. According to the blurb, the session will look at differences between countries. I think this is very important. For instance, the American Fair Use is different from the British Fair Dealing. What constitutes a short extract? A line from a song lyric may be only 10 words long, but could be regarded as a substantial portion. It's a minefield, and hopefully these sorts of topics will be covered in the seminar.
By the way, the Society of Authors is brilliant as far as advice on such matters is concerned, and they have a spot just opposite where the seminar takes place. I think you should consider joining.
The Creative Writing Process
13:45 - 14:30
Authors Rosanna Ley and CL Taylor, in conversation, chaired by Writing Magazine editor Jonathan Telfer. My process, for what it's worth, is to go swimming. I often find that results in quite detailed ideas that I have to then frantically write down once I'm showered and dressed, before they disappear!
I imagine the authors in this discussion have a more methodical and scaleable approach.
